With the media being heavily concerned with police/civilian interaction these days, we tried to answer the question, does the police budget have a correlation to the local crime rate? For this Hack, we decided to look at all of the crime data as well as the Police budget for the years 2011 through 2015. The crime data for 2014 and 2015 are estimations based on the previous trends. What we were trying to determine if there is a correlation between the police budget and the number of different types of crime. An inverse correlation was expected. It would make sense that the higher the police budget, the lower the crime rate. This is not necessarily the case. In addition to the number of crimes that occurred, we display the crime statistics by neighborhood so that one can obtain an understanding of which parts are more dangerous than others. With the data and graphs that we compiled from Booz Allen Hamilton, we hope to spark meaningful conversations about law enforcement and crime in the United States.
